Spay & Neuter: Healthier Pets, Happier Communities

At My Vet Animal Hospital, we believe that responsible pet care includes making thoughtful decisions—like spaying or neutering your pet. These routine procedures not only help reduce the number of homeless animals but also offer important health and behavioral benefits for your furry friend.

Spaying (Females)

Spaying, or ovariohysterectomy, is the surgical removal of a female pet’s ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes. It’s a safe and common procedure. While many pets begin spay discussions around 6 months of age, our veterinarians will provide individualized guidance based on your pet’s breed, age, and health to determine the best timing.

Benefits of Spaying:

  • Prevents unwanted litters
  • Eliminates the risk of ovarian and uterine cancers
  • Protects against serious uterine infections (pyometra)

What to Expect After Spaying:

Spaying is considered major surgery, so your pet will need 10–14 days of recovery. Mild discomfort and tiredness are normal for the first few days. Pain management is provided, and our team is here to guide you through a smooth recovery.

Neutering (Males)

Neutering, or castration, involves removing a male pet’s testicles. It’s a routine surgery that is typically considered around 6 months of age, though our veterinarians will assess your pet’s breed, lifestyle, and development to recommend the ideal timing.

Benefits of Neutering:

  • Reduces aggression and dominance-driven behavior
  • Decreases roaming and urine marking
  • Eliminates risk of testicular cancer and reduces risk of prostate issues

What to Expect After Neutering: Neutering is less invasive than spaying but still requires a few days of rest and recovery. Your pet may seem sleepy and will need to avoid licking the incision to prevent infection. We’ll provide guidance and support every step of the way.
